Quality of Life

All homes and apartments are outfitted with a telemedicine station

Everyone wants a good quality of life.
Who doesn’t want good health, comfort and ease, and happiness?

When it comes to health, people’s minds tend to go straight to the doctors office. Here you would not have to travel to get checked and treated. Telemedicine is implemented as a standard in this society. Technologies that were once used in “granny pods” are now used in everyday homes. These include but are not limited to vitals sensors and medication dispensing.

There is no longer a need to take off of work or take kids out of school for a doctor’s appointment. Telemedicine is better for everyone in terms of cost and efficiency.

In addition to caring about those who are maintaining their good health and those that need special building accessibility, this society has measures in place for those who are visually impaired. The visually impaired have the struggle of trying to stay independent when in an unfamiliar place.

“A person’s ability to know information about her surrounding like location and nearby landmarks adds to her independence regardless whether she needs it directly or not.”

Elzabadani – Walking Pal: A Spatial and Context Aware System for the Visual Impaired

The Walking Pal is a system created by researchers to help the visually impaired get around. Three main functionalities are provided by this system:
(1) Navigating and Describing Nearby Places
(2)Text Recognition and Reading (top photo)
(3)Crosswalks and Pedestrian Traffic Lights Detection (bottom photo)

Comfort and Ease

The following types of technology are standard in homes, apartments, and office buildings across the country.

Home Security

Environment Control

Appliance Convenience and Safety

Security systems are connected through cloud services. All entry points can be controlled from a central unit in the home as well as using an application on a mobile device. Notifications are sent out to both the central unit and mobile devices. These systems can be engaged in a “Stay” mode and an “Away” mode. In addition, the application can be used to unlock doors rather than using keys. Garage doors are also part of this system. Just pull into your driveway and press the button in your application.

The central unit for security is also used for environment control. Environment control includes air conditioning and heat, and lighting. Applications are available for mobile devices to control these factors remotely. Rooms can be sectioned into zones for heating and cooling. In addition, these rooms can be zoned for lighting. There is no more having to get up to shut off a light after tucking yourself into bed.

All appliances are IoT devices. Everything can be controlled from a built in unit and from a mobile device. The reasoning behind this is for convenience and safety. The ability to control these appliances remotely saves lives. Smart devices such as stovetops, ovens, toasters, and coffeepots all have an automated shut off system in the case that they are left on when and you leave the house. This helps with the prevention of accidental fires. In addition, a mobile application offers remote control of these appliances from other rooms or floors of the home or apartment.

Resident Happiness

“You can build all this new high-tech infrastructure, but in the end citizens have to want to live there.” – Bonte

While all these smart initiatives are wonderful, it is important for us to keep trust and peace. With this being said, this country is comprised of an E-government and this government is not imposing these initiatives on the people. It was import that citizens were consulted about what they needed and wanted. This is especially true when their well-being and data privacy are effected.

Smart living has become a very popular dream of many around the world. There are dangers involves and not all will be successful. In addition, many have dreamt up fully smart cities with extreme urban living. As previously mentioned, this is not the way of our society as you can live freely wherever you’d like.

“In response, a rapidly growing social-scientific literature is critically exploring how the smart city imaginary (SCI) promotes techno-utopian’ fantasies, ignoring the risks of a technologically determined future.”
